My car (a 2006 Corolla) hasn’t had a cabin air filter cover since I bought it. It’s hard to google for this since I get a million hits for the filter itself and almost nothing for the cover. Is this something an independent shop could purchase for me? Do I need to go to a dealership? Is there any chance a big parts store would have it or could order it?

tried the local junkyard?
those things are common enough that theres bound to be a few of them all wrecked there... and that part doesnt sound like its a must nab at any junkyard

For a car over 10 years old my first stop would be a local pick a part type junkyard. You could probably pick one up for next to nothing.
Other than that you would probably have to order it through the dealer. I sincerly doubt a chain parts store would carry something that specific.

I wish you’d mentioned this like a month ago, I scrapped my corolla but it got crushed after they took the catalytic converter.

For something under $100 and obscure, IMO the dealer parts counter is a good bet. They should be able to pull up an exploded diagram and pinpoint exactly what you need. That could save a ton of time and hassle.
I would definitely try placing a call or email request to RockAuto or AutohausAZ first, though.
I’ve never been to a junkyard in my life — they’re usually so inconveniently located and time consuming, I couldn’t see it being worthwhile unless you had a ton of esoteric stuff you needed at once. Or something really pricey.

Toyota part number 88548-02030. Should be less than $10 from any Toyota dealership.
Source - ex parts guy for Toyota, may or may not still have login credentials to the OEM catalog, allegedly.

Why not go and get one yourself at a local Pick-A-Part?

That cheap, huh? Great! That’s probably about what it’d be from the junkyard after their dumb entrance fee and the gas for getting down there and back. Thanks!

Find a parts diagram for the HVAC system. Should give you a part number that you can plug into Amazon.
